The Grand Sweets and Snacks was founded in 1982 by Mr. G. Natarajan, a first generation
entrepreneur, who after a series of business setbacks, started this food business in a small
way at Gandhi Nagar, Adyar in Chennai. by capitalizing his wife Bangaruamma's culinary
skill, dipped into her personal recipies and started making and selling the generic snacks,
traditionally made by the old ladies of the house - the sweet Mysore pak and laddoo as
well as the crunchy, savoury 'mixture'. The marketing had a personalized touch the elderly
Brahmin would hand out religious booklets to bigger customers. As the business grew, he
hired more staff, mostly women, and expanded the variety of foods on offer.
Grand Sweets' offerings are legendary for their quality and taste. The manner in which the
shop got its name is an interesting story. This sweet shop was a small establishment back
in the early 80's and one of the customers commented that the sweets tasted really 'grand'.
That's how the name came into being 'The Grand Sweets and Snacks'
Slowly and steadily today it has a grown into a store of global fame. The world wide
clientele was built on a strong foundation of tradition, hygiene and simple home
atmosphere.
What keeps this kitchen running like a well-oiled machine are the 50 or so master cooks
who have been with the company for more than 20 years, each a specialist in his/her
product. Take for example Rukmini mami a.k.a. Poli mami. The soft-spoken septuagenarian
has been making polis - Mangalore and Thengai polis at Grand Sweets and Snacks for the
last 25 years.
The best ingredients are sourced with no compromise on quality and prepared
painstakingly by specialized staff who have decades of experience in preparing traditional
sweets and savories. We never use any preservatives or artificial flavouring in any of our
items. Our products are prepared fresh everyday.
For over 25 years, The Grand Sweets and Snacks has been a single outlet to keep up with
tradition and quality. Due to the growing demand of customers and to save the customers
trouble of commuting from other parts of Chennai to Adyar, we decided to open a few baby
steps and open a few outlets across Chennai. A Centralized factory in suburban Chennai is
where the sweets and snacks are prepared to maintain highest quality and hygiene. Items
are prepared on a daily basis and delivered to our outlets in Adyar, Sastri Nagar, Anna
Nagar and T. Nagar outlets.
In each of our outlets, there is an open kitchen which serves traditional items like adai-
avial, appam-stew, kuzhi paniyaram, thanjavur poli etc. Our main products are the
traditional Indian sweets like laddoo, jangiri, jilebi, poli, Bengali sweets, pedas etc, and savouries like murukku, thattai, cheedai, mixture etc., along with ready made rice mixes
like pulikkachal, paruppu podi and thokkus ( a thick pickled sauce) of onion, coriander,
curry leaf, tomato, kadambam(mixed vegetable) etc., which have a shelf life of 3 months.
In April 2011, Grand Sweets and Snacks launched their one of a kind Pure Veg Restaurant
offering meals and snacks from noon until 10:00 PM at the newly opened outlet in Bazzula
Road in T. Nagar.
Our customers get to taste the prasadam in leaf bowls called 'donnai' along with free
booklets on culture and traditions. These prasadam are given soon after their morning
prayers and evening prayers to all our customers.
Our quality is a reflection of the way we take care of our employees. All permanent
employees get good compensation with proper allowances, health and retirement benefits.
